Union Station

Restoring the “Untouchables” stairway at Union Station.

While MTH Industries is well-known for the Union Station skylight, we also performed the highly specialized cast iron restoration and glazing associated with the station’s iconic stairwells. This included work on the famous Canal Street stairs, immortalized in the film The Untouchables.

During the station’s massive $22 million Great Hall restoration, we were responsible for the intricate metalwork that supports these grand passageways. Our role involved the careful refurbishment of the ornamental cast iron frames and the integration of historic-grade materials to ensure the stairways maintained their 1925 Beaux-Arts character while meeting modern safety and structural requirements. By blending heavy industrial repair with fine architectural finishing, MTH helped preserve one of the most photographed interior features in Chicago.
